Using an individual combination of popular sayings, symbols and personal touches, each love token sends a powerful message to the beloved folks who were left behind.

This token, bearing the name John Howe, stirs great emotion by combining phrases such as, "When this you see, remember me" and "liberty is sweet" with images of leg irons and manacles. But it is the simple phrase "aged 14 years" that truly expresses the family's sense of loss.

Convict love tokens, also known as leaden hearts, were deeply sentimental and symbolic pieces. They offered convicts a final chance to have a piece of themselves kept in the hearts, minds and homes of their loved ones. When British convicts were transported to Australia in the 18th and 19th centuries, their sentences may have been for seven or fourteen years. However, for many it was almost impossible to return home. Tokens were often made from British cartwheel pennies, worn down and engraved with messages of love.
